Evolution of my Music Tastes

Today I decided to do a massive clean out of my Ipod's music selection. Usually I only change the songs on my Ipod when there is no room to add the new CD I bought. I realized today though, that I don't listen half the music I had put on there. Instead of trying to figure out what I do and don't listen to with the list in-front of me, because its so much easier to rationalize that I listen to it if it is already there. So I deleted everything off my Ipod playlist, and my current playlist (renamed "A"-list, because it is a compilation of songs that remind me of Alan in some way). The only playlist I left unchanged is my Augustana playlist, because for some reason Augustana will not come up under my Artists list on my Ipod. Yay for creating a playlist to get around the system.

After going through all of my music and picking out a good 3 gigs of songs for my Ipod, I discovered that most all of the music I put on was either Indie or Alternitive, with a bit of Hip-hop thrown in, because and Ipod without Flobots is just indecent. Plus, for some reason Hip hop helps me do math. No lie.

The funny thing is how different my music taste has become over the years. I used to listen to much harder music- and I was much more of a rock fan. Bands like Breaking Benjamin, Seether, Three Days Grace, and Staind were always on. Now I hardly listen to them.
I think it has a lot to do with my mood. Last year (or two years ago in "school time" - senior year) I listened to angry music. This complemented my mood- something I still have trouble explaining. Senior year I was a tough year for me emotionally speaking. There was a lot of rage and depression going on... This past year has been the complete opposite.

Not only was going away to school good for me to bloom as a person, and become more comfortable with who I am, but I met Alan- and its been the happiest year of my life, and I can only see every year to come getting better and better. This change has moved me to listen to more and more love songs. Its also gotten me interested in hip-hop because Alan really enjoys it and shares the music he likes with me.

As far as indie music, that one has been coming for a while. Laura has introduced me to amazing artists such as Iron and Wine, and The Decemberists. From there my love for indie music has taken off. Most of the music is folky and relaxing. Iron and Wine can take the edge off any bad day (check out the Boy With A Coin music video if you want to see the best video ever made, and get a taste for the band) and most of the other indie bands I listen to just put me in a good mood.

With the new arsenal of music on my Ipod, I am ready to do some listening (and check out the new band MGMT Alan got me interested in). If only the Ipod adapter for my car wasn't broken...
